The Deacons and the Presbyterian Women’s Association of the Delmont Presbyterian Church are supporting the charity, “Newborns in Need”. This charity is the current mission of the Deacons for the March. The Presbyterian Women have decided to keep this as an on going long year mission of the church.
Newborns in Need is a fourteen-year-old charity that specializes in the needs of premature and newborn babies that are sick or in crisis. All essential items are provided free of charge to those in need.
The Delmont Presbyterian efforts are serving the local Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter in East McKeesport. This chapter serves hospitals and shelters in our area, including Excela Health Latrobe Area Hospital, Children’s Hospital and Allegheny General Hospital.
Many of the needy babies come from below the poverty line and do not have adequate clothing or blankets. Many babies are born too soon and clothing small enough cannot be purchased. Volunteers sew what is needed. Patterns are available specifically for babies from 8 ounces in weight to newborn.
Church volunteers sponsor monthly group sewing workshops. They are currently making sock dolls, blankets and gowns. Many individuals also do the sewing projects at home.
Especially needed are baby gowns and sleepers (sizes preemie and newborn) and blankets. Both new and gently used clothing and blankets in good condition are welcomed. Other baby essentials; toys and comfort items; baby fabric and yarns are also appreciated. Several patterns are available for hats, booties and blankets. Cash donations are also accepted and are tax deductible.
